Descript review 2026
We've been using Descript actively for several months. This is the honest review — what it does well, what it does badly, and who should (and shouldn't) pay for it.
The one-liner
Edit audio and video like a Google Doc. Fastest path to a polished podcast.
What it is
Descript is a Audio/video editing tool aimed at podcasters and video creators who edit by editing the transcript. Pricing starts at $15/month (Hobbyist plan).
What it does well
- Transcription-based editing
- Overdub voice cloning
- Studio Sound
- Screen recording
- Multi-track
What it does badly
Every tool in this space has trade-offs. Descript's biggest weaknesses are usually pricing tiers that jump steeply once you outgrow the starter plan, and a learning curve that's steeper than the marketing suggests for first-time users. None of these are deal-breakers — but you should walk in expecting them.
Who should buy it
Podcasters and video creators who edit by editing the transcript. If that's you, this is one of the strongest tools in its category and worth the trial.
Who should skip it
If you're using the tool weekly or less, the free tier or a cheaper alternative will cover you. Don't pay enterprise prices for occasional use — that's how SaaS budgets balloon.
